This blogging questionnaire celebrates Three Weeks for Dreamwidth (April 25-May 15). See the questionnaire introduction post.
Do you think people should crosspost the same or similar things in more than one place on Dreamwidth? Why or why not? Are there conditions that influence whether or not it's a good idea?
I think people should crosspost things where relevant. Without posting, communities die out, and crossposting is much easier than making a new post each time. Lots of people write things relevant to communities but just don't post there.
The trick is to avoid overdoing it. If you post to your personal blog and one topical community, that's ideal. If you post to multiple communities that don't overlap (e.g. a story about a female character could go in a feminist community and a fanfic community) that's also fine. What gets aggravating is when someone posts to a lot of communities with high overlap, so many readers see the same post half a dozen times.
Some communities have parameters stating whether or not they welcome crossposts, and if so, under what conditions. Usually the lower traffic, the more tolerant they are; the higher traffic, they less they want crossposts. If you host a community, you should specify your stance on crossposts.
