Holiday Events on Dreamwidth
Nov. 26th, 2022 04:30 pmThe holiday scene is very active on Dreamwidth, whether focused on a specific activity or the season in general. There are various subcategories of activity and ways to find them.
For all your fannish needs, see
fandomcalendar and
fandom_on_dw. Those are key places where people advertise most fests, exchanges, and things of that sort. Some events are hosted on Dreamwidth in a community or private blog. Others are advertised here but happen elsewhere like AO3.
Harry Potter : Wolfstar Winter Wonderland Challenge 2022
Lucifer (TV) Secret Satan
Miserable F*cks November Social at
ushobwri (NaNoWriMo support)
Soul Connection- A Bleach Valentine's Day Exchange
There are also communities that activate seasonally. Examples include:
17hols -- SVT Holiday Fest
adventdrabbles -- Drabbles for winter time.
fandomtrees -- A Multifandom Holiday Gift Fest
ksadvent -- Kirk/Spock Advent Calendar
An annual fest celebrating Kirk/Spock throughout the month of December
newyearcntdown -- New Year's Countdown
A once-a-year one-a-day challenge!
startrekholidays -- A secret santa gift exchange for anything and everything Star Trek. Fic and fanart welcome.
Definitely watch for one of the biggest events in Dreamwidth, the
snowflake_challenge coming up in January. You can make lots of new friends in that one.
Communities often hold their own holiday activities, and these rarely come up in a search. If they're not posted in an event notice community, the only way to spot them is when they show up on your reading page. That's how the word spreads for many of these things. A good example is the Community Card Exchange on
drawesome. You sign up to send and receive handmade holiday cards -- and you can send as many cards as you want. It's a fun project for artists and crafters.
Some folks create shopping, community self-promotion, or gather posts in their blog. You can see an example of this in my Winterfaire 2022 post. It's a place where creative people can advertise goods or services they offer that are suitable for holiday gifts, or ask for help finding a particular type of thing they want to buy. If you see other such posts, please share a link. The more of them we can connect together, the easier it gets for folks to go from one to another until they find what they want. Without having to deal with screaming crowds or freezing weather! \o/
Another category is memes. If you have enjoyed memes on venues like Twitter or Facebook, then check out the ones on Dreamwidth. These have more variety as the platform allows for larger posts. Memes give you two options: 1) You can interact with the meme on whatever blog you found it. 2) You can copy the meme to your own blog or post it in a relevant community. If copying a meme, it is polite to cite where you found it. Most of those will just be other copies, but someone makes these things, so if you find the creator then definitely give them credit.
One example is this Anonymous Love Meme. You post a comment, that creates a thread for yourself, and other folks reply with something they like about you. Love memes are popular in the November-December holiday season, but also in February for Valentine's Day.
You may also see friending memes. These are common from the holiday season through January because of
snowflake_challenge and into February because of Valentine's Day. A friending meme or friendzy typically consists of a short (or occasionally quite long) set of topics or questions that you fill out to tell folks who you are and what kind of connections you'd like to make. People will comment under it if they are interested. Then you read everyone else's answers and visit the most interesting blogs. Like love memes, friending memes typically spread by word of mouth as people link to or copy them, although occasionally they get advertised in event communities. If you can't find a holiday friending meme on your reading page, there is this Twitter Exodus Friending Meme. Also check out
friending_memes for older ones that you can copy to your blog and run anew.

Are you hosting or participating in a holiday activity on Dreamwidth? Or another venue but you've posted a description or are organizing it on Dreamwidth? If so, comment with a description and a link so that more folks can find it. Happy holidays!
